The Importance of Outdoor Play

I used to have a sign above my desk that stated a teacher's prayer: "Dear Lord, please don't let it rain at recess."

I've prayed that prayer many times. Children need outdoor recess. They have boundless energy to expend. Beyond that, they need the freedom to run, jump, climb, and use their "outside voices." Children need unstructured time to explore, to engage in imaginative play, and to learn how to navigate relationships with other children.

Being outdoors in God's creation has a positive effect on a child's well-being. Seeing the leaves begin to change color and feeling the cool breeze ushering in at least a semblance of fall weather promotes cognitive  growth. And many of us can attest to the effects of sunshine on our moods and emotions.

This week God answered my teacher's prayer by sending sunny days and cooler temperatures. We were thankful it wasn't too wet---or too hot--for outside recess. The smiles on these faces say it all: Happy Fall, Y'all!

"O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and infants
    to tell of your strength,
silencing your enemies
and all who oppose you." Psalm 8:1-2 New Living Translation
