Balancing Work and Play

Young children learn through play. That’s why our kindergarten lessons include games, songs, and art activities.  At the end of the day we have “Free Centers” time, where the students can choose to create with blocks or art materials, or they can engage in dramatic play or read a book.  The children can explore and create. During this time, and also on the playground, they are developing social skills as they learn to share, take turns and work cooperatively.  The development of social skills is an important part of Early Childhood education.
Kindergartners learn new concepts in a variety of ways: using visuals, using music and chants, using motions, using objects that the children can touch and manipulate, and using technology, so that all students can have a chance to learn in a way that best suits them. We balance whole class instruction with small group lessons and individual work.
In Early Childhood we balance play and work, because it’s during these formative years that the students are learning to develop good work habits. They’re learning to follow directions, to complete work on time, to strive for excellence, and to keep working hard even when the task is challenging.
Here are some pictures of our students at work and at play, learning how to make new friends, learning how to work together, learning how to pay attention, learning how to do their best, and learning how to glorify God in all they do.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”  Colossians 3:23
