“The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had
become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
all the time. The Lord was grieved that
He had made man on the earth, and His heart was filled with pain…. But Noah found
favor in the eyes of the Lord.” Gen. 6:5-8
“Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his
time, and he walked with God.” Gen. 6:9
“Noah did everything
just as God commanded him.” Gen. 6:22 (Gen. 7:5, 9, 16)
In a culture characterized by wickedness, Noah was a man
swimming against the current. It’s not an easy thing to do…living a righteous and blameless life among
people whose every inclination is towards evil. I imagine Noah was often on the
receiving end of those evil intentions, but he stood firm and held on to his
principles.
And God noticed.
We don’t often think of God as Someone who grieves, but the
Bible says God’s heart was filled with pain; the people He created, the ones on
whom He’d poured so much tenderness and care, had rebelled against Him.
But not Noah. Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
And God saved Noah from the flood.
I try to impress on the children that God expects us to do
what’s right, even when everyone around us is doing the wrong thing. Right now
they might be tempted to get involved in relatively minor wrongdoings—things like not paying attention in class or not
following the playground rules. But one day the stakes will be higher. One day these
students will encounter peer pressure pushing them towards serious offenses
with severe consequences.
Let’s help our children to understand that sinful choices
hurt others and fill God’s heart with pain. Let’s teach them to do what is
right instead of following the crowd. And let’s remind them that God takes care
of those who walk with Him.
